He was Minister of the Interior of Belarus (2000-2009) and chairman of Belarus Ice Hockey Federation. Belarusian Ice Hockey Association (Belarusian: ) is the Belarusian national ice hockey federation. It was founded on March 6, 1992 and became a member of the IIHF in two months (May 2, 1992). In May 2009 the Belarusian Ice Hockey Association enjoyed a major success in its history, getting the right to host the 2014 IIHF World Championship. Ice hockey (frequently simply called hockey in countries where it is the most popular form of hockey) is a team sport played on ice, in which skaters use sticks to direct a puck into the opposing team's goal. It is a fast-paced physical sport. Ice hockey is most popular in areas that are sufficiently cold for natural reliable seasonal ice cover, such as Canada, the northern United States, the Nordic countries (especially Sweden and Finland), Russia, the Baltic States, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia.
