uMunthu, Ubuntu, Utu: Introduction to an African Philosophy

For any people to take hold of their own self-understanding and development, they need to create a philosophy of their own. This book argues that this has to happen in Africa from their own traditions of wisdom. Without this undertaking, Africa is bound to be defined by others in any way they like, and the African will be victims perpetually without a sense of being rooted in their own self-understanding determination. The challenge is for the Africans to reclaim their past, critique the present, and link the two in a manner in which they will contribute to a future that is conducive for the growth of umunthu (humanness) and blessed development. This is possible through radical and Afro-centric educational reforms, the politics and economics of umunthu.
