What began as a military aid program by the United States in 1950 to assist the French in subduing communist rebels in French Indochina, became, by 1965 an all-out war between South Vietnam and North Vietnam in which the United States was deeply involved. The United States Air Force was deployed to South Vietnam as part of this effort. What began as a small US military assistance program to South Vietnam, grew into a wider regional conflict. American efforts focused on four major areas of combat: South Vietnam, North Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. The first United States Air Force personnel assigned to South Vietnam arrived in August 1950, when the United States established a Military Assistance Advisory Group (MAAG), with headquarters in Saigon.
