The University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova (Romanian: Universitatea de Medicin i Farmacie din Craiova) is a tertiary educational institution in the city of Craiova, in south-western Romania.The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Craiova, was founded as a separate entity on 5 June 1999 and it is one of the largest Faculties in the country with over 4.000 students and 500 employees.Romania has a long standing tradition in the medical field. The Romanian health care system, has been in existence since 1700.George Emil Palade, the Nobel Prize winner of 1974 in Physiology or Medicine, was born in Ia i, in North-Eastern Romania, while Nicolae Paulescu, the discoverer of insulin, was born in Bucharest, Romania.
