Urban Dispersal around Kumasi, Ghana
Details
Unplanned suburban growth Urban areas across the world are experiencing rapid fringe growth. This book explores the haphazard outcomes around Kumasi, Ghana. It analyses explanatory factors, outlining the effects of transportation infrastructure, consumer preferences and land management structures. Results show that the key factor is the problem of co-ordination of traditional and modern land management systems. The book suggests that the main challenge to improve dispersal outcomes is to reorganise land management and development control structures, a rethink of ways to finance infrastructure investments in fringe locations, and developing housing financing mechanisms to speed up home constructions. This book offers a new African perspective on suburban development and is highly recommended for academics, planners, and other urban managers in both developed and developing countries.
