User awareness on environmentally sound disposal of E-Waste in Kenya
Details
The present level of development globally cannot be sustained without growth in information and communication technology (ICT). The increased demand for user electronics and electric products together with the increased pace at which technology is evolving has resulted in an increased amount of obsolete products that must be either disposedof or recycled by the society. These products, referred to as waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) or electronic waste (e-waste), electronic equipment considered to be hazardous and do not, in their functional state, serve any purpose to any intending user unless the equipment has been refurbished. Currently, e-waste generation, transboundary movement and disposal are becoming issues of concern around the world. User electronics are the fastest growing sector of municipal solid waste (MSW) in both developed and developing countries and arguably one of the most toxic.
