Because of the hardware/microcode, after an instruction is fetched for execution, the PSW is updated to point to the NSI before the instruction is performed.The PSW consists of two words: the first contains various status indicators not usually of interest to the application programmer, but the second contains the NSI. Note that the high-order bit of the NSI indicates the addressing mode: if it is on, then the NSI is to be interpreted as a 31-bit address, else it is to be interpreted as a 24-bit address.
