Eighteen of the detainees were present at Combatant Status Review Tribunals (CSRTs) conducted by the U.S. military to review their cases. The camp where 21 of the 22 Uyghur captives were living prior to the American aerial bombardment is reported to have had 35 Uyghurs living there. Uyghurs are an ethnic group from Central Asia and Xinjiang province in western China. They call their homeland East Turkestan. The Washington Post reported on August 24, 2005 that fifteen Uyghurs had been determined to be "No longer enemy combatants" (NLECs).
