The device consists of a perforated table top containing a vacuum chamber, and a vacuum pump to keep the vacuum chamber below ambient pressure. The workpiece is placed on the top of the vacuum chamber, and thus held down by the pressure differential between the vacuum chamber and the outside air. A vacuum pump is a device that removes gas molecules from a sealed volume in order to leave behind a partial vacuum. The vacuum pump was invented in 1650 by Otto von Guericke.
