Because of the President's role as Commander-in-Chief he exclusively uses military transports for international travel, however it is the civilian Secret Service which operates the President's motorcade.Since 1953 whenever the President is on board a military flight its call sign is the name of the armed service followed by the word "One". Thus Air Force One, Army One, Coast Guard One, Marine One and Navy One. It should be noted however that only the Air Force and Marine Corps actively maintain craft for the Commander-in-Chief, and that as of March 27, 2010 (2010 -03-27)[update] the President has not flown in a Coast Guard craft. If the President uses a civilian plane it is designated Executive One.
