As of the 2000 census, the population was 57,565. Its county seat is Franklin.Venango County was created on March 12, 1800 from parts of Allegheny and Lycoming Counties. The origination of the name "Venango" comes from as it was known to Native Americans of the region as Onenge, meaning Otter. This was corrupted into English as the Venango River. The settlement at its mouth was likewise called Venango, and is the site of present-day Franklin, Pennsylvania.Venango County was home to an oil boom in the years following discovery of natural oil (petroleum) in the mid 1850s.
