Video Conferencing in High Bandwidth Access Networks

Future high speed access networks offer the
opportunity to implement high quality video
conferencing systems. Based on the RoCS demo network
at the Carinthia Tech Institute in Klagenfurt,
Austria, two different solutions for video
conferencing are analyzed. On the one hand, the
assets and drawbacks of using the widely accepted
Video for Windows standard are discussed, and on the
other hand, the usage of the iPORT software
development kit from Pleora Technologies is covered
in this book. Furthermore, as video quality in such
systems strongly depends on hardware, an evaluation
of frame grabbers and cameras along with the
compatible software leads to a system recommendation
for a state-of-the-art optical demo-network.
