The Vinjefjorden is a fjord in Norway. It begins at Vinjeøra in the municipality of Hemne (in Sør-Trøndelag county) and flows west through the municipalities of Aure, Halsa, Tingvoll, and Kristiansund (in Møre og Romsdal county). At its end, it flows into the Talsjøen and Freifjorden. The Halsafjord, Skålvikfjorden, and Valsøyfjorden branch off of the 53-kilometre (33 mi) long Vinjefjorden. The highway E39 runs along the south side of the fjord for much of its length. A fjord is formed when a glacier cuts a U-shaped valley by abrasion of the surrounding bedrock. Glacial melting is accompanied by rebound of Earth's crust as the ice load and eroded sediment is removed (also called isostasy or glacial rebound). In some cases this rebound is faster than sea level rise. Most fjords are deeper than the adjacent sea; Sognefjord, Norway, reaches as much as 1,300 m (4,265 ft) below sea level.
