Details

Staphylococci are primary parasites of human beings and animals, colonizing the skin, skin glands and mucous membranes.Generally their presence is not clinically significant, but they sometimes act as opportunistic pathogens and cause infection in debilitated or immunodeficient subjects. About 10-30 per cent of healthy persons carry Staphylococci in the nose, perineum and also on the hair.It is one of the five important organisms that cause nosocomial infections. It is present as a long term carriage organism in approximately 30% of the world population.Hence the chance of it causing infection in normal and immuno-compromised individuals is high. The organism is capable of causing both deep seated and superficial infections and recent studies show that the molecular types isolated from superficial sites and deeper tissues are distinctly different. The capability to establish an infection greatly depends on how they invade and get entry to the deeper tissues. This may be due to the presence of various virulence factors possessed by the organism. In the present study an attempt is made to demonstrate the virulence genes (like coa gene) of S.aureus isolated from healthy Carriers.
