The linguae& litterae series, edited by Peter Auer, Gesa von Essen and Werner Frick, documents the research activities of the School of Languageand Literature of the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS). These research activities in literary studies and linguistics are characterized by an approach that is theoretically and methodologically "state of the art" and interdisciplinarily open.

In linguistics the accent is on the corpus-based, quantitative and qualitative investigation of language; in literary studies the focus is on the comparative, transdisciplinary analysis of literary phenomena in their cultural contexts. At the same time the series deals with the productive interfaces and synergies between modern linguistics and literary studies (as well as the humanities, social and natural sciences with which they interact). It seeks a new, contemporary reformulation of the humanities research curriculum and its problem and concept orientation for the future.

The series has a clear international orientation - each volume is multilingual, containing German, English and French contributions and, depending on the volume, articles in Italian or Spanish as well. Each individual volume is peer reviewed by an international editorial board.

Each year 2-4 volumes are published.

During the 19th century, photography was almost absolutely considered to represent a medium guaranteeing authenticity. By contrast, in literature and film of the 20th century, it was precisely this characteristic attributed to the photographic method that was problematized and varied. Based on specific case studies from literature and film, the collected contributions of this book focus on the evidence of photography and its presentation in different, specifically narrating forms. The authors are scholars of German, English and Romance literature and the cultural sciences as well as media scholars.

Die Schriftenreihe linguae & litterae, herausgegeben von Peter Auer, Gesa von Essen und Werner Frick, dokumentiert die wissenschaftlichen Aktivitäten der School of Language and Literature des Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) im Bereich einer theoretisch und methodisch avancierten, interdisziplinär geöffneten Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaft. In der Linguistik liegt der Akzent auf der korpusbasierten, quantitativen und qualitativen Erforschung von Sprache, in der Literaturwissenschaft auf der komparatistisch-transdisziplinären Analyse literarischer Phänomene in ihren kulturellen Kontexten. Zugleich nimmt die Reihe die produktiven Kontakt- und Synergiezonen zwischen moderner Linguistik und Literaturwissenschaft (und den mit ihnen im Austausch stehenden Geistes-, Sozial- und Naturwissenschaften) in den Blick und sucht nach neuen, für die zeitgemäße Reformulierung des humanwissenschaftlichen Forschungscurriculums richtungsweisenden Fragestellungen und Konzepten. Die internationale Ausrichtung der Reihe findet ihren Ausdruck in der konsequenten Mehrsprachigkeit der Bände, in denen deutsch-, englisch- und französischsprachige Beiträge, ggf. auch Artikel in italienischer und spanischer Sprache erscheinen. Jeder Einzelband wird im Rahmen eines peer-review-Verfahrens durch ein international besetztes Editorial Board begutachtet. Pro Jahr erscheinen 2-4 Bände.
