Details

The major focus in this book is how higher education
could enhance access of students with special
educational needs.

Access in this book is discussed and defined through
various discourses. The argument draws on an
eclectic mix of theoretical sources (i.e.
poststructuralism, postmodernism and critical
theory). The understanding of SEN and access to
higher education has to do with how marginalised and
excluded SEN students understand the barriers and
what they think could be done to overcome them and
what they feel and aspire to become.

The discourse raised challenges oppression,
exclusion or marginalisation of students with SEN.
This work is seen as playing a role in the process
of the emncipation of the SEN students.

Emancipation in this book is understood as something
that the marginalised collectively provide for
themselves. The author of this book has come to
realise that emancipation is not the gift of the
powerful.

This work seek to deconstruct and de-essentialise
the category of psycho-medical model as a universal
model of understanding SEN.
