Voicing the Subaltern
Details
John De' Mathew can be said to be the most prolific musician from central Kenya. So far he has sang over 180 songs having launched his music career in the early 80's. His Music range from Love songs, Political songs, and general commentaries on social issues. Unlike most popular musicians, his lyrics are very symbolic thus attracting multiple interpretation as a result of the extent to which De' Mathew utilizes a wealth of figures of speech to colour and enrich meaning in all his songs. This book explores themes, style, performance and ideologies in songs of John De'Mathew. The book advocates for the need to examine the literary wealth plausible in popular songs. This book is therefore a seminal project, which aims to popularize research and studies on popular songs as literary discourses and the need for their inclusion in the academy.
