The band was founded by Ramesh Srivastava, Jason Chronis, Matt Simon, Mitch Calvert,and Jared Van Fleet. Early incarnations of the group also included Jennifer Moore and Brandon Eastes. Their first recordings, a self-made CD-R, were produced in 2003 and sold at a few independent record stores in Austin.Voxtrot released their debut EP Raised by Wolves, in 2005, and toured nationally for the first time. The band soon began receiving praise from online and print publications, such as SPIN.com and Pitchfork Media. SPIN.com noted that Raised by Wolves is "...a stunning mini-collection of John Hughes-heyday paeans, twitchy pop, and surging, Strokes-y dancefloor fillers."
