It is the Head Quarters of Talappally Taluk.This town is situated on the Trissur - Shornur Sate Highway22 and is directly connected to Kunnamkulam (another major town on National Highway 17). There is a railway station here - and this article uses the spelling used by the Indian Railways.There are two places with similarly pronounced names - vadakkenchery and Wadakkanchery. Both spellings are used interchangeably. In Malayalam, this town is ; and the other place, situated in Palakkad district, just off the National Highway 47, is pronounced . There is a huge demand for last many years for making Thrissur - Perinthalmanna - Nilambur - Ooty or Bangalore as National Highway.
