Winckelmann und die Mythologie der Klassik

The contributions from a German-Italian conference on the subject of descriptions of art at the time of Winckelmann and his successors are collected in these bilingual proceedings. They deal with the theoretical foundations as well as the literary-aesthetic effects of a radically new approach to classical ancient art and its mythological context. The development from descriptive to narrative forms, in which the autonomous status of the work of art characteristic of the Modern Age can be recognised, is apparent.
