Word Order Transfer in Third Language Acquisition

Word Order Transfer in Third Language Acquisition investigates the syntactic influences of German and Italian on the acquisition of English word order in a German educational setting. In the opening chapters terms, definitions and foundational issues such as the effects of bilingualism, the effects of bilingualism on third language acquisition or the typological characteristics of German, Italian and English word order structures in declarative sentences are discussed. Samples of free written texts collected from German students are analyzed following the views of functional pragmatics at the syntactic level and the results are discussed. The book concludes with some reflections for language teachers.
