The XT Mobile Network is a 3G UMTS mobile network run by Telecom New Zealand, which theoretically operates on the WCDMA 850 MHz & WCDMA 2100 MHz frequencies. It features improved performance, better global roaming and a wider range of handsets compared to the older Telecom CDMA network. The XT Mobile Network differs from the CDMA network because it features SIM cards which allow subscribers to readily change handsets and is available for subscription on Post Paid (Contract), as well as Prepaid. It launched at 7:30am on 29 May 2009. Telecom advertises 7.2Mb/s USB devices for mobile broadband for use on the XT Mobile network, as well as the Sony Ericsson W995, an exclusive launch product for the XT network. On launch day Telecom advertised 14.4Mb/s as available, however 3Mb/s is a realistic speed to expect for HSPA devices with roughly 1Mb/s upload.
