High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The XVI Army Corps was a corps of the Union Army during the American Civil War. The corps served under Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant in the Army of the Tennessee. Usually it occupied regions of the South, such as protecting the supply lines of the army during the Vicksburg Campaign. Maj. Gen. Stephen A. Hurlbut commanded the corps with a base at Memphis, Tennessee. In 1863, a detachment of the corps under Maj. Gen. Cadwallader C. Washburn participated in the Siege of Vicksburg. In 1864, the corps was divided into two wings of two divisions each. The left wing, under Maj. Gen. Grenville Dodge participated in Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. It was dissolved at the end of the campaign and its units divided between other formations of the Army of the Tennessee.
