Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The Yak-140 was an experimental fighter designed to achieve the greatest possible performance, using the greatest possible thrust to weight ratio. One aircraft was produced, but it never flew. Because the design of the Yak-140 was to be similar to the existing Yak-50 progress went quickly. The engine chosen for the design was to be the Mikulin AM-11 (later redesignated R-11 and used in the Yak-28), which had been designed by Turmanskii. Because this was not ready in 1953 the first prototype was designed around the AM-9D with afterburner. The duct was straight from the nose intake to the tail nozzle. The mid-set wing was exceptionally thin, with a 55.5% sweepback and two long but shallow fences. The fuselage was circular, with a double frame behind the wing permitting the rear fuselage and tail to be removed for engine changes.
