As of August 31, 2006, the city has an estimated population of 93,280 and the density of 2,185.56 persons per km². The total area is 42.68 km². Located in the northern portion of the Nara Basin, the Saho River and the Tomio River flow through. The majority of the city is flat, although the portion west of the Tomio River is a little elevated. There are many ponds in the city, which were created for cultivating goldfish. Many makers' factory will be invited to a southern Showa area around from the 1960s, and it is famous also as an industrial complex. The settlement of Hieda, located east of the Saho River, is well known for its old fashioned buildings, which are surrounded by moats.
