He was born in Guyuan, a village of Ningxia Muslim Autonomous Region which has been a mutual convergent region between Muslim culture and Han chinese civilization. Being brought up under such circumstance together with traumatic experiences in the Great Famine in Maozedong's Cultural Revolution, he had eventually become aware the distinctive pattern of health behavior and people's action under various forms of hygienic conditions and demographic customs, and this laid the fundamental pedal for the focus of his future career. Dr. Yang graduated from Shanxi Medicine University (Public Health) in 1982. He was appraised as an outstanding contributing scientist by the government of Jiangsu Province in 1996. Yang served in University of California, San Diego as Assistant Research Scientist during 1998 to 2000. Yang Tingzhong is now employed in Zhejiang University as professor in Department of Social Medicine.
