It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election. The Ynys Môn Welsh Assembly constituency was created with the same boundaries in 1999. The official name of the constituency in English was Anglesey, until it was replaced by the Welsh name Ynys Môn. Parliament approved the change, to take effect from the United Kingdom general election, 1983. This was purely an alteration of the official name, as no boundary changes were involved.
