Zionist entity is a term used primarily in the Arab world and Muslim world as a pejorative metonym for the State of Israel. The phrase is seen as a means of expressing hostility towards Israel, refusing to acknowledge its existence, or denying its right to exist. Its Russian equivalent was frequently used in the Soviet Union and other Communist countries during the Cold War era. In 1917, a preacher at Al-Taqwah Mosque in Algeria used the term in his Friday sermon in reference to the Balfour Declaration. Before 1967 the term was the standard one used by Arabs to refer to Israel, and was particularly popular in official broadcasts of Egypt, Syria, and Jordan during the 1960s and ''70s.
