High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Zirconyl chloride is an inorganic compound with the empirical formula Zr(OH)2(H2O)4Cl2. This colourless salt is formed upon hydrolysis of zirconium tetrachloride. It is one of the most commonly encountered water-soluble derivatives of zirconium.As indicated by its formula, zirconyl chloride is a misnomer - the compound contains no oxide. Instead it is an hydroxide-containing cluster consisting of the cation [Zr4(OH)8(H2O)16]8+. This cluster features four pairs of hydroxide bridging ligands linking four Zr(H2O)44+ centers. The chloride anions are not ligands, consistent with the high oxophilicity of Zr(IV). This salt is conveniently prepared by crystallization of an aqueous solution of zirconium chloride. The salt crystallizes as tetragonal crystals.
